The Current Situation in Haiti

1. Deteriorating Security and Armed Conflicts in ‘Cité Soleil’

Intense Clashes Between Gangs: Starting from May 10, large-scale armed conflicts broke out between rival gangs in Cité Soleil—a major slum and strategic flashpoint in the capital, Port-au-Prince—as well as on roads surrounding the international airport.

Withdrawal of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Hospital: After more than 40 gunshot victims and hundreds of displaced people flooded La Fontaine Hospital in Cité Soleil within a mere 12 hours, MSF temporarily closed the facility and evacuated medical staff and patients for security reasons. This has severely worsened the critical healthcare gap in the regions.

Blockade of International Airport Logistics: As security on the roads near the airport deteriorated drastically, major Haitian enterprises released a statement warning that “the government’s efforts to secure safety are woefully inadequate, and because the roads around the airport are uncontrolled, the national economy and logistics are on the brink of paralysis.”

2. Surging Displaced Populations and the Child Crisis

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): Gang violence has forced approximately 1.4 to 1.5 million residents to abandon their homes and flee, creating an unprecedented internally displaced persons crisis.

Severe Starvation: Nearly half of the population, roughly 5.7 million people, is suffering from acute food insecurity. Gangs controlling major roads and agricultural lands continue to disrupt the supply of food and medicine.

Spike in the Ratio of Children in Gangs: Following a recent field investigation, the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict warned that “currently, about half of the gang members in Haiti are children (child soldiers).” Driven by extreme poverty and hunger, children are joining gangs either by force or for survival. Furthermore, over 1,800 schools have been destroyed or have ceased operations, leaving the education system in ruins.

3. International Security Mission and Trends in U.S. Immigration Policy

Limitations of the Multinational Security Support Mission: Although the vanguard of the UN-authorized Multinational Security Support mission (an expanded gang-suppression force led by Kenya) began arriving on-site in April, it is still not enough to seize control of security across the capital due to fierce resistance from ‘Viv Ansanm’ (a coalition of gangs) and a lack of equipment and funding.

Tensions Among Haitian Immigrants in the U.S.: When the Trump administration officially attempted to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti last February, a court blocked the move. Federal Supreme Court litigation is currently underway. As a result, more than 350,000 displaced Haitians residing in the United States face the threat of deportation.

Prayers for Haiti

We pray for the restoration of security and peace. May the gang violence and armed conflicts devouring the capital be halted, and may the bloodshed of innocent residents come to an end. Grant that the newly restructured international security mission and police forces fully accomplish their calling, and that righteous law and order be established so that daily life—where people can walk the streets without fear—is swiftly restored.

We pray for the marginalized and suffering. Embrace the 1.5 million displaced people who have lost their homes overnight and are wandering aimlessly. Send helping hands to the 5.7 million citizens who are starving without shelter, clean water, or sustenance. May the blocked supply routes open up so that food and medicine can reach those in need without hindrance. Protect the safety of medical professionals and aid workers who dedicate themselves to saving lives amidst danger.

We pray especially for the next generation, the future of Haiti. Stop the tragedy of children being driven into gangs due to poverty and hunger. Rebuild the stolen places of learning, and protect this generation so they may grow up holding books and hope instead of guns and knives.

We pray for political stability and international solidarity. Give leaders wisdom and hearts of compassion for the poor, so that the process of elections and political transition serves the genuine stability of the people rather than self-interest. May the world not turn away from the pain of this land, but together open a path of hope through continuous attention and solidarity.

소외되고 고통받는 이들을 위해 기도합니다. 하루아침에 삶의 터전을 잃고 유리 방황하는 150만 명의 실향민들을 품어 주소서. 머물 곳이 없고, 마실 물과 양식이 없어 굶주리는 570만 명의 백성들에게 도움의 손길을 보내 주시고, 차단된 보급로가 열려 식량과 의약품이 필요한 곳에 막힘없이 닿게 하소서. 위험 속에서도 생명을 살리기 위해 헌신하는 의료진과 구호 활동가들의 안전을 지켜 주시옵소서.

특별히 아이티의 미래인 다음 세대를 위해 기도합니다. 빈곤과 굶주림 때문에 갱단으로 내몰리는 아동들의 비극을 막아 주소서. 빼앗긴 배움의 터전이 다시 세워지게 하시고, 총칼 대신 책과 희망을 쥐고 자라날 수 있도록 이 세대를 보호하여 주소서.
